A House of Tales

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit and photograph a few lovely places in Portugal and, for some reason, one particular place has stayed with me since.

I’m particularly fond of this photo due to its mystical nature, which is telling of the character of the place it portrays. The “Casa das Histórias Paula Rego” (Cascais, Portugal) is, to me, more of a monument than a museum, very much resembling ancient temples lost in the shadowy depths of a tropical forest.

Honouring one of Portugal’s most renowned and internationally acclaimed contemporary artists, Paula Rego, “Casa das Histórias” or “House of Tales”, has a mystical air about it, at the heart of which lie painted stories from the artist’s childhood.

The tall and slender coniferous trees in front of the museum, far from being an obstruction to the facade, are in fact an extension of the museum itself, an integral part of the story.
